5 reps is the optimum number to increase strength. Fewer reps with higher weights increases the strain on your joints and ligaments. Higher reps increases the potential for injury as fatigue sets in.
I like the 5 ascending sets. Start light, progress upward to ONE heaviest work set. I am 52 and have the accumulated injuries that go with that age. ONE work set is plenty to avoid injury.
